High school students in Dala North and Laugwata in West Kwara’ae, Malaita, now have safer, more spacious learning facilities following the completion of two new classroom projects.
The classrooms were funded through the Solomon Islands–Australia Community Partnerships Program.
At Dala North Community High School, a new three-classroom block will help the school accommodate its 400 enrolled students.
In Laugwata, a new classroom block contains three classrooms and an office and will serve six highland communities with a combined population of more than 3,000 people.
Before the project, students attended classes in deteriorating primary school buildings or travelled long distances at considerable cost to access secondary education.
Australia has supported 342 small-scale infrastructure projects across every constituency in Solomon Islands since 2019, benefiting thousands of people.
Australian High Commissioner Jeff Roach said Australia was proud to support communities across Solomon Islands through small-scale infrastructure projects.
“Australia is proud to support communities all across the country with life-changing small-scale community infrastructure projects, in partnership with the leaders and Government of Solomon Islands,” Roach said.
He thanked West Kwara’ae MP Alfred Tuasulia for supporting the projects.
“MPs know their communities best, so when a project attracts the support and contribution of an MP, we’re confident it reflects the priorities of the local community,” he said.
“When communities and local leaders lead the planning and implementation, they create outcomes that are transparent, sustainable and make a real difference for years to come.”
Roach said the new classrooms would also support the Government’s goal of expanding access to education.
“Education is an important part of the Solomon Islands–Australia partnership, and Australia is proud to work closely with the GREAT Coalition Government to support its education agenda, which is a key national priority,” he said.
The Australian High Commission is accepting applications for its Community Partnerships Program until 24 August 2026.
