West Pacific Junior Tennis Championships Underway in Honiara

The Solomon Islands is hosting the West Pacific Junior Tennis Championships for the first time, with matches getting underway today in Honiara.

It’s a five-day tournament which brings together Under-12, Under-14, and Under-16 players from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands, marking a significant milestone for tennis development in the country.

The West Pacific Junior Tennis Championships is a premier regional event aimed at developing junior talent, promoting high-level competition, and strengthening sporting ties across the Pacific.

Importantly, the tournament also serves as a qualifying event for the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships (POJC), providing young athletes with a clear pathway to higher-level regional competitions.

Solomon Islands Head Coach Junior Benjamin said local players are well prepared for the challenge.

“We’ve seen strong improvement in their confidence and game awareness, and they are ready to compete at this regional level,” Benjamin said.

He added that Tennis Solomon Islands coaches have worked closely with the players to build confidence, discipline, and resilience ahead of the championship.

“Hosting this championship is a major opportunity for our young athletes. Playing at home allows them to gain valuable international experience while feeling supported by family and the local tennis community,” he said.

Vice President of the Solomon Islands Tennis Federation, Jenny Mark, expressed pride in the team’s preparation and thanked key partners and supporters.

“Our players and coaches have shown exceptional dedication, committing to training throughout the school holidays in preparation for this championship,” Mark said.

She noted that the tournament’s status as a qualifier for the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships makes it especially important for young athletes seeking to progress along the regional development pathway.

On behalf of the Solomon Islands Tennis Federation, Mark also acknowledged the support of the Oceania Tennis Federation and the International Tennis Federation for their financial and technical assistance, as well as the Solomon Islands Government and the National Sports Council for their continued funding and support.
