Acting PM Reminds Youths of Their Role in Our Democracy

Democratic action is not just about voting. It also means community dialogue, civic education, and advocacy—never violence.

Acting Prime Minister Fredrick Kologeto made the statement today as Solomon Islands joined the world in celebrating the International Day of Democracy.

A media statement from the Office of the Prime Minister noted the important role of young people in shaping a positive future for the nation.

He repeated that democratic action includes dialogue, education, and advocacy—not violence.

“By empowering young people to speak, listen, and lead together, Solomon Islands can keep democracy alive and responsive to the needs of all citizens.”

“Your participation today is an investment in the peace, stability, and progress of tomorrow,” he affirmed.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that young people are a vibrant and energetic part of the population. “Your voices carry innovation, diversity, and hope,” the Acting Prime Minister said.

He said young people can inspire others and make choices based on shared values like equality, justice, and openness. “These are not just dreams; they are the core ideas that keep democracy strong,” he added.

He reiterated that Solomon Islands can keep democracy alive by empowering youth to speak, listen, and lead together. “Your participation today is an investment in the peace, stability, and progress of tomorrow,” he said.

The Acting Prime Minister noted that Solomon Islands’ democracy is in the national constitution, which guarantees fundamental rights and freedoms — including life, liberty, security, and protection of the law; freedom of conscience, expression, assembly, and association; and protection of privacy and property.

He acknowledged that these rights come with limits to ensure they don’t harm others or the public interest.

This year’s celebration theme is “Youth Voices, United Choices: Youth in Democratic Action.”
