“Change Is Coming”: New Solomon Islands PM-Elect Wale Promises New Direction For Solomon Islands

by Charley Piringi

A new political chapter has begun in the Solomon Islands after Mathew Wale was elected Prime Minister, pledging reform, discipline, and national unity while warning that the changes ahead may be difficult.

The result was formally announced by the Governor General HE Reverend David Tiva Kapu,  following the parliamentary vote for prime minister.

The vote follows weeks of political instability and a failed motion of no confidence last week.

Of the 49 votes cast, with one absentee and one invalid ballot, Members of Parliament elected Wale to lead the country, marking a significant political transition.

In his inaugural address, Wale thanked former prime ministers and previous governments for their contributions to nation-building, but made clear that his administration intends to pursue a new direction.

“Elected leaders are servants, not lords,” Wale said, urging citizens to hold his government accountable.

A central message of his speech was a promise that “change is coming,” coupled with a warning that reforms may bring hardship before improvement.

Wale described the current global environment as a difficult period shaped by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty, pressures he said the Solomon Islands cannot avoid.

He pledged that his government would adopt disciplined and prudent management to steer the country through these challenges.

He also called on Solomon Islanders to stand united, support necessary reforms, and actively contribute to national development.

“Put your hand to the plow,” Wale urged, calling on citizens to work together in building a stronger nation.

Wale also placed strong emphasis on the role of young people in shaping the country’s future. He encouraged youth across the nation to remain ambitious and become active participants in the transformation he envisions for the Solomon Islands.

Hiss said his new administration prioritized youth empowerment, greater inclusion of young voices in decision-making, and long-term strategies aimed at creating opportunities for the country’s growing young population.

As the new government prepares to take office, expectations are already rising over how Wale’s promised reforms will reshape the political and economic direction of the Solomon Islands.
