China Supports Sea Transport Initiative To Empower Women In Solomon Islands’ Vonavona Lagoon

In a major step towards improving rural livelihoods and women’s economic participation, the West New Georgia/Vonavona Constituency (WNGVC) in Solomon Islands’ Western Province has launched a new sea transport initiative for women vendors, with strong support from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

The project, backed by SBD$100,000 from China and an additional SBD$50,000 from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), has enabled the purchase of three modern motorised boats for women traders in the Vonavona Lagoon. For generations, local women relied on traditional dugout canoes to transport produce and goods to markets—a method that is slow, physically demanding, and often risky.

“This initiative is more than just boats; it is an investment in their health, well-being, and economic freedom,” said Mr. Jino Dhari, Constituency Development Officer.

“Our mothers have been the backbone of our families and the local economy, yet they have struggled for too long with inadequate transport. By easing their burden, we are strengthening the very fabric of our communities.”

The new motorised boats, equipped with outboard engines, will transform daily life for women vendors.

They will enable faster, safer, and more reliable transport to markets, ensuring fresh produce reaches buyers in better condition. In addition, the boats will improve access to essential services, including healthcare, education, and community programs—an important step in enhancing social and economic inclusion in remote areas.

Mr. Dhari highlighted the broader development impact.

“Investing in transport infrastructure is key to unlocking the economic potential of our rural areas. This project reflects our government’s dedication, under the leadership of our Member of Parliament, Honourable George Temahua, to prioritising the needs and livelihoods of our women and girls.”

On behalf of the constituency, Mr. Dhari expressed gratitude to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for its steadfast partnership, and assured that the boats would be fully utilised to maximise benefits for the community.

Appreciation was also extended to the Ministry of Rural Development for its ongoing support through the CDF mechanism.

“The official handing over of the boats, funded under the 2024 CDF program, will be conducted once all logistical processes are finalised,” Mr. Dhari confirmed.

“We look forward to celebrating this milestone with our constituents, partners, and the courageous women of Vonavona Lagoon, who are the true drivers of this progress.”

The initiative demonstrates how international partnerships and targeted local investments can directly improve livelihoods, empower women, and strengthen rural economies in the Solomon Islands.
