The Solomon Islands has officially begun the initial phase of a major rehabilitation project for Mendana Avenue Road, one of Honiara’s key thoroughfares, stretching from Heritage Park Roundabout to the Honiara City Council Roundabout.
The project is being carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Construction Project (LMCP).
Work will proceed in sections, beginning from the Heritage Park Roundabout towards the Solomon Motors branch at Point Cruz, with measures in place to minimize disruptions to traffic and local businesses.
During this early stage, crews are focused on drainage trench excavation, pipe installation, and construction of drainage pits along the outer lanes on both sides of the road.
Inner lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic remain open, ensuring continued access for vehicles, pedestrians, and local businesses. Sidewalks and designated crossing points remain safe for pedestrian use.
Meanwhile, rehabilitation work continues on Tandai Highway, from Townground to White River, specifically the stretch between Rove Bulk Shop and Rifle Range/Bishop Dale Road.
Tasks include road excavation, subgrade preparation, laying of sub-base and base course layers, installation of curbstones and footpaths, and application of surface treatments such as prime coats and sealing.
“Once the Tandai Highway project is completed, our full attention will shift to completing the remaining 1.7 kilometres of Mendana Avenue up to the Honiara City Council Roundabout,” said Ishmael Alulu, Director of the Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division.
The Central Project Implementation Unit (CPIU) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development extends its gratitude to all road users for their patience and cooperation during these vital infrastructure upgrades, which are being carried out with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government.
