Heavy rain and bad weather across Solomon Islands will likely continue into the weekend, the Solomon Islands Meteorological Services (SIMET says.

And forecaster Alex Rilifia urged members of the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.

“We will continue to monitor and keep updating the public of the latest situation as we move into the weekend,” Rilifia said.

He said the current bad weather is caused by an active trough connected to a low depression  in southern Vanuatu. An active trough is a weather system that often brings cloud, rain, and unsettled weather

Rilifia the bad weather is likely to ease on Sunday.

Solomon Islands’ wet season (or monsoon season) typically runs from November to April every year.

Heavy rain over the past days has caused widespread flooding across the country. At least one major bridge in northwest Guadalcanal at Kohimarama was destroyed, cutting off road transportation to and from Honiara.

Along the Lungga river, east of Honiara, at least two people were reportedly washed away.

Police confirmed one has died after his body was found.

In Noro, Western Province, police say a man died after a large tree fell onto a building he was occupying, Tuesday this week.

He was rushed to the nearby Helena Goldie Hospital but died later.

Police say the fallen tree was due to extreme weather in the area at that time.
