Maritime transport in Isabel Province received a significant boost as Caretaker Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele officially welcomed the handover of the MV Isalei, Tueday.
The 11.5-metre fast craft is a direct donation from the Shandong Province of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), marking a new milestone in provincial-level international cooperation.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Point Cruz Yacht Club, Mr Manele characterized the vessel as a tangible symbol of the growing friendship between the Solomon Islands and China.
Strengthening Provincial Links
The acquisition of the MV Isalei is the result of strategic engagements initiated last year between Isabel provincial leaders and Chinese officials.
Mr Manele highly commended Isabel Province Premier Lawrence Hayward, MPA and his provincial administration for their proactive leadership in securing the asset.
“You have shown that provincial engagement with our international partners can yield real results,” Manele stated.
He noted that the successful partnership demonstrates how mutual respect and development cooperation can deliver practical outcomes that directly improve the lives of rural communities.

Technical Specifications and Impact
The MV Isalei is designed to navigate the challenging waters of the Solomon archipelago, offering a safer and more reliable transport option for the people of Isabel and nearby islands.
The vessel’s specifications include:
Length: 11.5 metres.
Capacity: 10 passengers and two crew members.
Endurance: A range of up to 210 nautical miles.
The caretaker Prime Minister emphasized that the vessel would do more than just transport people; it is expected to strengthen maritime connectivity, improve access to essential services, and support safer travel across the province.

A “Son of Isabel” Reflects on Cooperation
For Mr Manele, the ceremony held deep personal significance.
“As a son of Isabel Province, this occasion carries special meaning for me personally,” he shared.
“I understand the importance of reliable maritime transport for our people and communities.”
He described the donation as “friendship translated into action.”
He also thanked the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China and officials from Shandong Province for their continued partnership.
A Call for Continued Partnership
The handover comes at a time of continued emphasis on practical cooperation to support national development.
Mr Manele used the platform to call for a renewed commitment to development partnerships that prioritize maritime safety and shared prosperity.
“Let us proceed with a renewed commitment to practical cooperation, maritime safety, and the shared prosperity of our peoples,” the Prime Minister concluded.
He noted, MV Isalei symbolises the positive outcomes achieved when nations and provinces work in harmony for the benefit of their citizens.
