Douglas, who entered the race as an independent, was one of the two female candidates who contested the April 17 polls, along with five males.

She polled 4,255 votes – 1,556 ballots ahead of her runner-up Dr Gabriel Salini, who received 2,699 votes.

The outgoing MP, Bartholomew Parapolo, who contested under the banner of OUR Party, failed in his bid to defend the seat for a third term.

“I dedicate my win to the people of Ngella. This is their victory. I thank them for their support and the faith they placed on me,” Douglas said after the declaration of her victory by Returning Office Nathaniel Salini.

“Let me say that my vision for Ngella constituency transcends politics, because my aim is to foster unity, work with the people and build a great and vibrant constituency,” she added.

“My victory is about the good of the people and their dreams for a prosperous future.”

Douglas’ victory came in her second attempt. She first contested the Ngella Constituency in 2019.

She said she’s well-aware of the enormity of the responsibility the people of Ngella placed on her shoulder when they elected her, and that she’ll do her best to serve them.

“Of course there’ll be challenges along the way so it’s important we work together to meet and tackle those challenges.

“As a woman and mother, I know the challenges that come with leadership. We face these everyday within the home when raising our children and dealing with family matters.”

Ngella is one of the two constituencies that make up the Central Islands Province.

The other is Savo-Russells, whose new MP is yet to be declared.
