The Solomon Islands has lost one of its most outspoken and influential political leaders, Hon. Daniel Suidani, the former Premier of Malaita Province and current Member of the Malaita Provincial Assembly for Ward 5, West Baegu/Fataleka.
His passing was confirmed this morning by his former political adviser, Celsus Talifilu.
Mr Talifilu released an official statement announcing that the late Hon. Suidani passed away at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara today.
“It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Honourable Daniel Suidani, Member of the Malaita Provincial Assembly for Ward 5, West Baegu/Fataleka, who passed away this morning at the NRH.
“Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official commemorations will be announced in due course,” the statement read.
A Controversial yet Respected Leader
Hon. Daniel Suidani rose to national prominence as Premier of Malaita Province from June 2019 to February 2023, during a politically charged period that placed him at the centre of the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy debate.
His tenure coincided with the national government’s 2019 decision to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China — a move he strongly opposed.
Suidani’s administration maintained a close relationship with Taiwan, despite the national shift, and refused Chinese development assistance in Malaita.
His government instead established the “Auki Communiqué,” which imposed a moratorium on business licences for entities linked to the Chinese Communist Party.]
These bold positions earned him both admiration and criticism.
To his supporters, Suidani embodied the spirit of self-determination and provincial autonomy. To his detractors, his defiance deepened political division within the country.
Illness and Medical Treatment in Taiwan
In-depth Solomons understands that when Suidani was Premier, his health had been seriously compromised.
In early 2021, he was diagnosed with a suspected brain lesion (provisional diagnosis of a “space-occupying lesion”) and required urgent advanced scanning and treatment outside the Solomon Islands.
On 26 May 2021 he arrived in Taiwan to undergo CT/MRI scans and further treatment, noting that the lack of a CT-scanner in Honiara had been one motivating factor. His overseas treatment, which included time in quarantine in Taiwan, stirred diplomatic sensitivity given his province’s continued relationship with Taiwan despite the national government’s diplomatic shift.
The government of Solomon Islands described his trip as “unauthorised”.
However in July of the same year, the government publicly welcomed his recovery progress.
Political Turbulence and Ouster
In February 2023, Hon. Suidani was ousted in a vote of no confidence, ending his nearly four-year premiership.
His removal was widely interpreted as a consequence of his outspoken resistance to Chinese engagement in the province.
Nevertheless, he continued to be a vocal advocate for Malaitan interests, emphasising transparency, accountability, and provincial empowerment.
Later that year, he faced another major political setback when the Minister for Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening (MPGIS), Hon. Rollen Seleso, terminated him as a Member of the Malaita Provincial Assembly for alleged misconduct.
The decision sparked public outcry, particularly among Malaitans who saw the move as politically motivated.
Suidani challenged the termination in the High Court, arguing that the Minister’s decision was unlawful.
In a significant ruling handed down earlier this year, the court sided with Suidani, declaring his dismissal invalid and restoring him to his seat as MPA for Ward 5. The ruling was seen as a victory for the principles of due process, provincial rights, and the rule of law.
Return to Provincial Politics
Despite his ouster, Suidani remained a political force.
In 2024, he successfully reclaimed his seat in the National joint elections, representing West Baegu/Fataleka in the Malaita Provincial Assembly.
His enduring popularity reflected strong grassroots support among Malaitans who viewed him as a defender of local rights and a critic of foreign dominance.
A Legacy Left Behind
Hon. Suidani will be remembered as a bold and principled leader who stood firm on his beliefs, often at great political cost.
His leadership drew international attention to the Solomon Islands’ internal debate over sovereignty, governance, and external influence.
Tributes are already pouring in from across Malaita and beyond, acknowledging his courage, his service, and his deep love for his people.
Funeral arrangements and official commemorations will be announced later by his family and the Malaita Provincial Government.
