Papua New Guinea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Immigration and Border Security, Hon. John Rosso, has commended the Solomon Islands for successfully launching its new Border Management System (BMS) — a milestone marking the country’s leap into modern, digital border control.
The launch ceremony, held in Honiara on 28 October 2025, brought together officials from the Papua New Guinea Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority (PNG ICSA), the Australian Department of Home Affairs, and the Solomon Islands Government. The initiative forms part of a broader trilateral partnership between the three countries, focused on improving regional border management and capacity-building.
“On behalf of the Government of Papua New Guinea, I congratulate the Solomon Islands Immigration Division and the Solomon Islands Government on this successful milestone,” Hon. Rosso said. “This marks a major step in strengthening border security, improving immigration services, and advancing regional cooperation across the Pacific.”
Hon. Rosso said the new digital BMS demonstrates the Solomon Islands’ commitment to modernizing border operations, ensuring secure and efficient travel and trade, and combating transnational crime.
“As neighbouring Pacific nations, Papua New Guinea recognises the importance of this transformation. The Solomon Islands’ achievement will not only improve operational efficiency and integrity but also support our shared goal of keeping the region safe,” he added.
Since 2024, the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority and the Australian Government have been working closely with the Solomon Islands Immigration Division to procure, develop, and implement the BMS — a project seen as a model for future digital border innovations across the Pacific.
