Solomon Islands is mourning the passing of Ulawa-Ugi MP William Bradford Marau, who died on 10 October 2026, at the age of 48 following a prolonged illness.
Born on 16 July 1978, Marau entered national politics in November 2014 when he was first elected to the 10th National Parliament representing Ulawa-Ugi.
He went on to serve three consecutive terms in Parliament, securing re-election in 2019 and most recently in April 2024.
Over his parliamentary career, he held key executive portfolios, including Minister for Commerce, Industries, Labour and Immigration, as well as Minister for Justice and Legal Affairs.
Prior to entering politics, Marau worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade before becoming an entrepreneur.
His legal and health troubles had made headlines in recent years.
He was facing a pending court case in the Honiara Magistrate Court regarding allegations of criminal conversion involving $5 million in constituency shipping funds from 2016.
In 2026, his trial was repeatedly adjourned due to severe health issues, during which he traveled to India for a kidney transplant and medical treatment before returning to Honiara.
Just weeks before his passing, in late August 2026, he formally pledged his political support to Prime Minister Matthew Wale’s GREAT Coalition Government.
Wale has expressed deep sadness over Marau’s passing, describing it as a significant loss of a life dedicated to public service and representing the people of Ulawa-Ugi with dignity and commitment.
Across social media, tributes have poured in from grieving Solomon Islanders, constituents, and colleagues honoring his community work – including his constituency housing schemes and infrastructure developments – while offering prayers and condolences to his family during this time of mourning.
It’s likely a by-election will be held before the next scheduled elections in 2028.
