The leaders of a newly formed 28-member political coalition have issued a formal ultimatum to Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele: resign immediately or convene Parliament to face a decisive test of leadership.
A letter was delivered to the Prime Minister’s Office today, where seven prominent political leaders—including Opposition Leader Matthew Wale and former Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo—argued that the current administration is now operating as an “intolerable” minority government.
The move marks a critical escalation in a week of political volatility that has seen the Prime Minister’s majority evaporate following a wave of high-level defections.
A Constitutional Showdown
The coalition’s demand is rooted in the fundamental democratic principle of majority rule. With the “Government for National Unity and Transformation” (GNUT) now reportedly commanding only 22 of the 50 seats in Parliament, the rival bloc asserts that the Prime Minister no longer holds a valid mandate to lead.
“The Solomon Islands constitution is built on the foundational principle of majority rule. A minority government situation is repugnant to the constitution. A minority government is therefore intolerable and unacceptable,” the leaders stated in the letter.
The group warned that if the impasse is not resolved swiftly, the nation risks severe instability.
“From past experience, the current political crisis, if not resolved quickly, has the potential to have very serious social and economic effects, including a constitutional crisis,” the letter highlighted.
Two Paths Forward
The coalition has offered Prime Minister Manele two distinct options to resolve the deadlock:
- Immediate Resignation: To “pave the way” for a new government to stabilize the country.
- A Parliamentary Test: If the Prime Minister believes he still holds the numbers, he must convene Parliament after Monday, March 23, 2026, to allow the recently filed Motion of No Confidence to be debated and voted upon.
“To avoid the crisis from creating even far worse issues for our people and our country, we respectfully call on you to do the right and responsible thing and immediately resign as Prime Minister,” the coalition leaders wrote.
The Shift in Power
The crisis was triggered by the withdrawal of the People’s First Party (PFP) from the GNUT coalition agreement. Under the Political Parties Integrity Act 2014 (PPIA), the PFP has joined five other political parties to form a new majority alliance.
The coalition leaders confirmed that this new agreement, signed by 28 Members of Parliament, has been officially registered with the Political Party Commission. This technical step is significant as it provides the Governor-General with a formal record that the Prime Minister has lost his majority.
“It is clear from mandatory steps taken under the PPIA… that you no longer command the majority of Members of Parliament. GNUT is therefore a minority Government,” the group stated.
A Call for Consistency
The letter concludes by appealing to the Prime Minister’s past record of democratic engagement. The leaders noted that on previous occasions, Manele has “willingly faced motions of no confidence and did not take any step to avoid Parliament meetings.”
They urged him to maintain that same respect for the parliamentary process now.
