Russell Islands Chiefs Urged to Strengthen Unity and Leadership

by Georgina Maka’a

In the Central Province of the Solomon Islands, the Russell Islands recently hosted its annual Lavukal Chiefs Day, a two-day celebration combining leadership training and the enthronement of new tribal chiefs.

The event, held over the weekend in Marulaon village on West Russell, saw five chiefs officially assume leadership roles, joining existing leaders in guiding their communities.

Speaking after the enthronement ceremony, Oliver Salopuka, Chairman of the Lavukal Chiefs House and Member of Parliament for the Savo/Russells Constituency, acknowledged the pivotal role chiefs play in their communities despite the challenges they face.

He said the Chiefs Day celebration is not merely a festive occasion but a forum to discuss issues requiring attention.

“I want to thank everyone who is here to witness this year’s Chiefs Day. Thank you for the roles you play in upholding our cultures and norms,” he told the chiefs.

Beslyn Piru, interim chair of the 2025 Lavukal Chiefs Day organizing committee, described the event as a very important day for the chiefs.

He also welcomed the newly appointed chiefs, who joined existing enthroned leaders to serve their people and ensure that communities follow the established rules.

“When you return to your communities, make use of your leadership roles and carry out your duties. When community leaders work together as a team, law and order will prevail,” he said.

One retiree, Raymond Vala, announced his retirement at the event.

He reflected on his tenure as chief, recalling that in his younger days people respected and listened to their chiefs and elders, a tradition he feels has changed today.

“My wish today is for community and church leaders to collaborate so we can build a safer, better society.”

This year’s theme is ‘Upholding, Culture, Unity  and Leaders.’
