Communities in the remote Savo-Russell Constituency of Solomon Islands have received new boats and outboard motors under a government-funded project designed to improve transportation and support rural livelihoods.
The marine transportation initiative, funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation for 2025, includes 11 fibreglass boats and 11 Yamaha outboard motors with engine capacities of 40 and 15 horsepower. The project is valued at more than SBD$800,000 (approximately USD$95,000).
Six boats and engines were handed over to recipient communities last week, while the remaining five will be delivered once they become available from the supplier.

Supporting Isolated Island Communities Without Road Access
The first group of beneficiaries includes the communities of Mane, Marulaon, Kiolene, and Yandina in the Russell Islands, and Reko and Balola on Savo Island.
According to Constituency Development Officer George Hassar, the project addresses one of the most significant challenges faced by island communities: lack of transportation infrastructure.
“With no road access on the islands, the only means of transport for our people is by sea using outboard motor engines,” Hassar said.
“This support will help people travel within the constituency and to the capital, Honiara, to access markets, education, employment, and health services.”
Reliable sea transport is essential in Solomon Islands, an archipelago of nearly 1,000 islands, where many rural communities depend entirely on small boats for mobility and economic activity.
Part of Broader Rural Development Strategy
The transportation project forms part of a wider development program led by Member of Parliament Oliver Salopuka, aimed at improving socio-economic conditions across the constituency.
Other initiatives supported through the CDF program include:
-
Housing construction projects on Savo and Russell Islands
-
Financial assistance to small retail businesses
-
Support for copra producers and fishers
-
Distribution of building materials and water tanks
-
Provision of musical equipment and infrastructure support for churches
These programs aim to strengthen both economic productivity and community infrastructure.
Education and Scholarship Support Also Prioritized
The constituency office has also invested in education through partial tuition support and scholarship programs.
According to Hassar, the office has been covering up to 50 percent of tuition fees for secondary and tertiary students under the CDF program. In addition, six scholarships have already been secured, with efforts ongoing to obtain further scholarship opportunities through the Ministry of Education.
National Program Targets Rural Development Across Solomon Islands
The Constituency Development Fund is a nationwide initiative administered by the Ministry of Rural Development and implemented across all 50 constituencies in Solomon Islands.
The program is designed to improve economic opportunities, strengthen essential services, and promote sustainable development in rural and remote communities.
By improving access to transportation, education, and income-generating opportunities, projects such as the Savo-Russell marine transport initiative aim to reduce isolation and support long-term development in some of the country’s most geographically dispersed communities.
