The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service has confirmed that Tropical Cyclone Maila has upgraded to a Category Three system, warning that the intensifying storm continues to pose a serious threat across the country.
In its latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Number Six issued at 7:30am Monday, the Meteorological Service confirmed that as of 5:00am, Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila was located about 240 kilometres southwest of Ranogga Island.
The system is currently moving slowly east-southeast over the Solomon Sea, tracking towards the southwest of Western Province while continuing to strengthen.
Authorities warn that gale-force winds of up to 87 kilometres per hour are affecting islands across Western Province, accompanied by very rough seas and swells ranging from 3.5 to 6 metres. Coastal flooding is also expected in vulnerable areas.
Other provinces, including Choiseul Province, Isabel Province and Temotu Province, are forecast to experience strengthening winds, reaching near gale force, along with moderate to rough seas and swells of up to 4 metres. Coastal flooding remains a concern in these regions as well.
The Meteorological Service has also warned of widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across all provinces, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding and landslides, particularly for communities in low-lying areas and near rivers and steep terrain.
Sea travellers are being urged to take extreme caution due to dangerous sea conditions and reduced visibility caused by heavy rain. Motorists are also advised to avoid crossing flooded rivers and streams of unknown depth.
Officials are calling on all residents to take necessary precautions as the cyclone poses a significant risk to lives and property. Communities are encouraged to share critical weather information, especially with people living with disabilities.
The public is advised to stay updated by tuning in to Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation and other media platforms.
The next tropical cyclone warning is scheduled to be issued at 1:30pm today.
