Twenty-four academic staff from Solomon Islands National University (SINU) have successfully completed the inaugural Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning, delivered through the Australian Government’s Australia Awards program.
The short course, offered in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), aims to strengthen teaching excellence and promote student-centred learning across the Solomon Islands’ higher education sector.
The graduates come from diverse disciplines—including nursing, public health, agriculture, engineering, and tourism—bringing enhanced teaching skills and innovative practices to SINU classrooms. Eleven of the graduates are women, reflecting Australia’s ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment in education.

Acting Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Andrew Schloeffel, congratulated the cohort, saying, “This program reflects Australia’s enduring commitment to Solomon Islands’ human development. By investing in educators, we are investing in the future leaders who will shape the nation’s progress.”
SINU’s Pro Vice Chancellor Corporate, Dr William Parairato, praised the graduates for strengthening both their professional capacity and the quality of education across the university, acknowledging the crucial support of UTS and the Australian Government in making the program possible.

Participants, including Assistant Lecturer Madeline Kili Solo, highlighted how the course boosted their confidence in integrating technology and modern teaching methods into their classrooms.
The initiative is part of the broader Australia Awards program, which provides world-class education and professional development opportunities for Solomon Islanders, empowering individuals, enhancing institutional capacity, and contributing to the country’s national development goals.
