Solomon Islands Supports Ceasefire In Israel-Iran Conflict

by Ronald Toito’ona

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to peace and diplomacy amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, stating that the country supports immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in all global conflicts.

Speaking to journalists in a press conference this week, PM Manele said Solomon Islands’ position on any conflict is for a ceasefire and de-escalation.

“We hope and pray that dialogue will prevail—whether in the Russia-Ukraine war or the conflict between Iran and Israel,” Prime Minister Manele said.

He added, Solomon Islands stands firmly on the principle that “there are no winners in war.”

The PM also urged for peace to be restored through diplomatic means.

“It is important that there has to be peace, a ceasefire—let diplomacy and dialogue take their course,” he stressed.

The Solomon Islands government has also confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure the safety of Solomon Islands citizens currently in the region, including students and workers.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Shanel Agovaka, confirmed that five agriculture students are currently in Israel. He said the government is working closely with Australia and Papua New Guinea, who are coordinating regional evacuation plans for their nationals.

“All airports in Israel are currently closed, but we’ve been in contact with the Israeli ambassador in Canberra. Our students are safe and under the care of the Israeli government,” Shanel said.

He added that one student in Qatar and several Solomon Islanders working in the aviation sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also being closely monitored.

“Our consulates are in contact with them and their families, and we’re coordinating with the embassy in Canberra to ensure their safety,” he said.

Shanel noted, the geographic proximity of Qatar and the UAE to Iran makes it essential to remain vigilant and proactive.

The Solomon Islands Government says it will continue to monitor the situation closely and will act swiftly to protect its nationals abroad while maintaining its firm stance on peace through diplomacy.
