Solomon Islands Independent MP, Peter Kenilorea Jr has been awarded the inaugural Senator Kimberly Kitching Award for Courage in Defence of Democracy, an international honour recognising parliamentarians who champion democratic values and human rights.
The award was presented on 8 November in Brussels, Belgium, during a global gathering of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC).
In a statement tonight, Kenilorea Jr said receiving the recognition was “truly humbling,” especially given the legacy of the late Australian Senator Kimberly Kitching, after whom the award is named.
“Senator Kitching was a staunch defender of democracy and its values and principles,” he said.
“To be recognized as a defender of democracy by my IPAC peers is truly humbling, and the commendation presented by Australian Senator Deborah O’Neal was moving for me as well,” the MP for East Are’Are said.
The Brussels meeting brought together parliamentarians from across Europe, Africa, South America, and the Pacific, providing a forum to discuss the rise of authoritarianism and global threats to democratic institutions.
Kenilorea Jr said exchanges with colleagues from different regions reaffirmed the shared commitment to democratic principles.
“It’s always great to meet up with parliamentarians from around the world who share the same democratic values,” he noted.
He said some of the testimonies presented at the gathering were emotionally powerful, particularly first-hand accounts of persecution in China.
“For me, to hear first-hand accounts of persecution, including of Christians, in a CCP-led China, was so deeply moving,” he said.
The meeting also examined growing geopolitical tensions, including concerns over the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. Experts and participants warned of the global consequences of conflict in the region.
“We heard of the need to avoid conflict in the Taiwan Straits and the South China Sea region and learned that the impact of war in that region will be economically catastrophic for the globe,” the son of the first Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Sir Peter Kenilorea, said.
A historic moment during the event was the address by the Vice-President of Taiwan — the first time a senior Taiwanese leader has delivered remarks inside the European Parliament. Kenilorea Jr said the decision by the EU Parliament to host the speech was striking in the current geopolitical climate.
“That the EU Parliament allowed the Vice-President of Taiwan to enter the chamber, let alone deliver remarks, was particularly intriguing in light of current geopolitical maneuverings,” he said.
Kenilorea Jr remains one of Solomon Islands’ most vocal advocates on issues of democracy, transparency, and geopolitical engagement. His participation in the IPAC meeting, and the international award he received, was part of his continued role in global democratic discourse.
