The Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has committed more than SBD$80 million to support rural development across Solomon Islands as the second phase of the Rural Sustainable Development Program (RSDP) was officially launched today.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, speaking at the launch, said the new phase represents “another significant milestone” in the partnership between Solomon Islands and the PRC, noting that the programme has already delivered tangible benefits to rural communities since its inception in late 2023.
RSDP funding has so far supported a wide range of community priorities, including small infrastructure projects, transport and fisheries initiatives, water and sanitation systems, renewable energy solutions, and other essential development needs in remote areas.
PM Manele said these investments align closely with the National Development Strategy’s goals of reducing poverty, improving basic services, and strengthening food security.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the programme’s strength lies in its people-centred approach, particularly its focus on inclusive development and environmental sustainability. He said these guiding principles will shape Phase Two as more constituencies and communities gain access to support under the expanded initiative.

PM Manele expressed deep appreciation to the Government and People of China for their continued partnership, acknowledging Chargé d’Affaires Yang Jie and officials from the Chinese Embassy for helping prepare the new phase. He also thanked the Minister for Rural Development, Daniel Waneoroa, and MRD staff for their technical leadership.
The Prime Minister encouraged constituencies benefiting from the programme to use the resources responsibly and ensure projects deliver real, long-term value to local communities. He said the government looks forward to seeing the continued positive impact of RSDP in the months and years ahead.
RSDP is a donor-funded partnership between the Ministry of Rural Development and the PRC Embassy. Launched in 2023, it succeeded earlier forms of rural development assistance and is designed to strengthen social and economic opportunities for rural citizens, especially those living in isolated or underserved areas.
