Prime Minister Matthew Wale has called on Germany and the European Union to strengthen their engagement with Pacific Island countries.
Wale made the call during a courtesy meeting with visiting German Ambassador Beate Grzeski, who is based in Canberra, Australia.
Speaking as Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, Wale stressed the importance of greater European engagement in the Pacific.
He said Germany and the European Union should support the region’s priorities.
He also called for Pacific perspectives to be reflected in international decision-making.
“Our voices in the region matter,” Wale said.
He said Pacific countries must have a meaningful voice on issues affecting their people, economies and security.
Wale said this was also important for the region’s future.
The meeting discussed ways to strengthen relations between Solomon Islands, Germany and the European Union.
Ambassador Grzeski congratulated Wale on his election as Prime Minister.
She also acknowledged the GREAT Coalition Government’s reform agenda.
Grzeski noted its focus on strengthening institutions and driving economic development.
She also highlighted efforts to improve opportunities for Solomon Islanders.
The Ambassador provided an update on Germany’s programmes and engagement in Solomon Islands.
She also outlined Germany’s wider engagement across the Pacific.
The two sides discussed the situation in the Middle East and its implications for the Pacific.
They agreed on the importance of Pacific countries remaining engaged in international discussions.
Wale said Pacific nations must be part of discussions on issues affecting regional and global stability.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue between Solomon Islands, Germany and the European Union.
Both sides also recognised the value of closer cooperation in advancing shared interests and supporting a stronger Pacific region.
