Australia supports wash facilities in Central Islands Province

More than 400 students and staff at Boromole Primary and McMahon Community High School in Central Islands Province now have access to upgraded water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities supported by the Australian Government.

The initiative, delivered by UNICEF alongside the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), fosters safer, healthier, and more inclusive school environments.

Boromole Primary School’s 124 students and 10 teachers now benefit from new ablution facilities, a rainwater harvesting system, an upgraded water supply, and a group handwashing station.

In Tulagi, McMahon CHS received a six-unit ablution block and handwashing facilities for 286 students and 11 teachers. MEHRD urged the school to maintain these facilities and promote hygiene.

“A safe and healthy learning environment is essential for student wellbeing and
educational outcomes,” a MEHRD spokesperson said.

Acting Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Schloeffel, reaffirmed Australia’s
commitment to improving essential services in schools.

“Every child should be able to access clean water and sanitation facilities at school,”
the Acting High Commissioner Schloeffel said.

“The Solomon Islands Government is working hard to bring these facilities to more
and more children across the country, and Australia is proud to be supporting that
work, along with our partners at UNICEF.”

The program enhances access to clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene services according to national standards.
