In an inspiring tarmac send-off at Honiara International Airport today, Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Wale shared a passionate message with the Solomon Islands men’s and women’s national football teams as they departed for Fiji to compete in the prestigious MSG Prime Ministers Cup.
Minutes before boarding his own flight to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Prime Minister took time to meet with the players, urging them to carry the hopes, spirit, and pride of the nation onto the field.
“You are going to Fiji carrying the hopes and pride of our people,” Prime Minister Wale told the eager athletes.
“I encourage you to give your very best, play with courage and discipline and, most importantly, make Solomon Islands proud.”
Reminding both squads that donning the national jersey is both a sacred honor and a weight of responsibility, PM Wale urged them to uphold the nation’s reputation both on and off the pitch.
“Play for each other, respect your opponents, and enjoy the experience.
Carry our flag with pride,” he added.
Highlighting football’s unique role as the heartbeat of the nation, the Prime Minister emphasized how the sport continues to bring communities together, inspire youth, and strengthen national identity across the Solomon Islands.
Even while thousands of miles away in New York, PM Wale promised he would be closely following every match of the teams’ campaign and looked forward to celebrating their achievements upon their return home.
