Hundreds of people gathered in Auki on Friday, 24 October 2025, to welcome the body of the late former Malaita Premier and Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Ward 5 West Baegu/Fataleka, Hon. Daniel Suidani.
According to youth advocate and close friend Maverick Peter Seda, the atmosphere was filled with grief and respect as residents from all walks of life lined the wharf and roadsides to pay their final respects to one of Malaita’s most influential and principled leaders.

He told In-depth Solomons from Auki that the Auki wharf was already crowded long before the casket arrived onboard MV Auki Express, Friday afternoon.
“Some couldn’t find space at the new wharf, so they stood at the old one and even along the roadside.
“The provincial law enforcement officers, members of the Provincial Assembly, and Auki Police were all waiting to escort the casket of the late Hon. Daniel Suidani,” Seda recalled.

In a rare and emotional scene, members of the Malaita Provincial Government — both executive and non-executive — came together at the wharf to receive the late leader’s body.
Witnesses described the moment as deeply moving, seeing former political rivals standing united to honour the man who, despite their differences, had placed Malaita in the international spotlight during his firm stand on the China issue.
As the convoy moved through Auki town, people stood silently along the streets, some in tears, while others bowed their heads in prayer.

The late Suidani’s casket was taken to the Malaita Provincial Chamber, where a brief ceremony was held. Premier Elijah Asilaua delivered a heartfelt speech recognising the legacy of the late Suidani, acknowledging his service as a former Premier and MPA for Ward 5, West Baegu/Fataleka.
Regardless of what position each person holds in the province, all the staff and political leaders of the Malaita Provincial Government came together yesterday at the Provincial Assembly to pay tribute to the late Hon. Daniel Suidani.
As one senior staff member said, “This is like a state funeral for Malaita Province.”

The atmosphere was emotional, with many staff sharing personal memories of him — describing him as a true Malaitan, a leader who always stood with his people and always put Malaita’s interests first.
Seda said, it was a powerful moment that showed unity, respect, and love for a leader who gave his heart to Malaita.
“Even the youths and betel nut sellers stopped for a one-minute silence when they heard the news of his passing, on Tuesday,” Seda said.
“Auki felt quiet and heavy with sadness. This is a reflection of how much he meant to everyone.”
Late Suidani’s body was kept overnight at the Provincial Chamber in Auki, where hundreds continued to pay tribute.

It will be transported to his home village of Sisifiu today for burial.
Late Suidani, remembered for his firm leadership, outspoken advocacy for transparency, and courageous stand on issues of sovereignty and governance, leaves behind a legacy that has forever shaped Malaita’s modern political identity.
