Prime Minister Matthew Wale will officially open the inaugural Papua New Guinea–Solomon Islands Investment Conference as keynote speaker when the landmark bilateral event is held in Honiara on 19–20 August 2026.

The conference, hosted by the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) and the Papua New Guinea–Solomon Islands Business Council (PNGSIBC), is expected to bring together government leaders, investors and business executives from both countries under the theme, “From Opportunity to Investment: Building the PNG–Solomon Islands Growth Corridor.”

A statement from SICCI said Wale’s participation highlights the Government’s commitment to driving economic transformation and strengthening trade and investment ties with Papua New Guinea.

“The conference will provide a platform to promote investment opportunities, encourage private sector partnerships and expand economic cooperation between the two Melanesian neighbours,” the statement said.

SICCI Chairlady Namoi Kaluae welcomed the Prime Minister’s confirmation, describing it as a strong endorsement of the conference and the growing bilateral relationship.

“We are deeply honoured that Prime Minister Wale has accepted our invitation,” Kaluae said.

“His participation reflects the highest level of government commitment to strengthening our bilateral economic relationship with Papua New Guinea and advancing a prosperous Melanesian economic corridor,” she added.

The conference follows the signing of the Framework Agreement on Development and Economic Cooperation (2026–2030) by Prime Minister Wale and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape earlier this year.

The agreement commits both countries to closer cooperation in trade, investment, mining, fisheries and infrastructure development.

Prime Minister Wale has also encouraged Papua New Guinea companies, particularly in the mining sector, to explore investment opportunities in Solomon Islands, emphasising the shared history, culture and economic aspirations of the two nations.

SICCI said conference delegates will also have the opportunity to engage directly with the Prime Minister on investment priorities and projects aimed at stimulating economic growth and creating jobs.

“The Government’s Local Content Policy, which reserves government contracts valued below SBD$50 million for Solomon Islands businesses, is expected to feature prominently in discussions on expanding opportunities for local enterprises.”

Other confirmed speakers include Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration Minister Harry Kuma, Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification Minister Derrick Manu’ari, and Solomon Islands National Provident Fund General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Mike Wate.
